Secure Your Site with SSL

Can incorporating an SSL (a “Secure Sockets Layer” that encrypts data on the web) have real benefits for your website? We think so.

Unencrypted browsers make it easier for unsecured data to be lifted by cybercriminals. That’s why we offer our clients three different versions: Standard SSL, Wildcard SSL and EV SSL. All three offer the same level of protection.

For most clients we typically install the Standard SSL (which installs the little lock symbol in the url bar).

The Wildcard SSL is meant to cover an entire domain (including subdomains).

The EV SSL offers the same protection as the Standard, with the only difference being in the perception. With the Standard, the lock icon is in the url bar but with the EV SSL, the company’s name (or trust seal) is in the URL bar. (See example: http://screencast.com/t/VMl4ElDH1)

This is by far the most expensive SSL and the most time consuming to get because the issuing company has to get a lot of information from the company to verify they are who they say they are.

You can find out more information about all of these here.

Why do we encourage users to get an SSL?

Protection: It protects the transfer of information.SSL secures all transfers of data from webpage to user and user to webpage. Everything is encrypted so nothing can be seen in the transfer. And only the individuals meant to see the data can access it.

Authentication:  In addition to encryption, a proper SSL certificate also provides authentication. This means you can be sure that you are sending information to the right server and not to a criminal’s server. The integrity of your data is protected.

Ranking: Using SSL can help you improve your SEO. Google ranks encrypted, secure websites higher. And a higher ranking means your clients and prospects have an easier time finding you.

Peace of Mind: This is a big one. The green icon signaling SSL’s use represents that the site is secure and that a user’s information is not falling into the wrong hands. Even if a user doesn’t know what an SSL is, they recognize the green icon. In a time when data privacy is a constant concern, SSL allows you to provide users with confidence what your site is secure.
